How do Kansans feel about care at the end of life?

The LIFE Project will host a series of Town Hall Meetings where we will listen to and learn from Kansans. These will occur in August and September 2004. Watch this page for a link to the schedules when they become available.

Kansans have shared with the LIFE Project how they feel about care at the end of life.

  • Kansans want to live their final days at their own home with family and friends.

  • Kansans fear reaching the end of life hooked up to machines.

  • Kansans do not believe the current health care system supports their wishes.

  • Kansans believe that it is important to plan for death and dying - but are not doing this planning.

  • Kansans express concerns that they do not know how to have meaningful conversations with those they love about their wishes at the end of life.

  • Kansans say that family considerations are of primary concern to them.

  • Kansans say they do not understand advance care planning and directives and are confused about what they really mean.

  • Kansans do not know how to talk with those they love about issues related to death and dying.

In 1999, we held a number of focus groups in various areas across Kansas -- urban and rural, large and small. In these groups, citizens shared with us about their hopes, thoughts and fears.

Kansas focus groups led by Diane Felt, 1999.
