LIFEline September 30 , 2004 New Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care
to be Reviewed at LIFE Project Annual Meeting The Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, released in April 2004, emerged as a groundbreaking initiative aimed at improving the delivery of palliative care in the United States. The guidelines, which were developed by a consortium of organizations representing physicians, nurses, acute care providers, hospice providers and citizens, included the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine; Center to Advance Palliative Care; Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association; Last Acts Partnership; and, National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals will want to be on hand to hear the practical implications of this important resource, as the guidelines are reviewed at the Kansas LIFE Project Annual Meeting, “LIFE Matters: Achieving Excellence in Care for Kansans Living with Advanced Chronic and Terminal Illnesses,” to be held November 19, 2004, from 9:00 – 4:00 pm at the Wichita Marriott. The LIFE Project (Living Initiatives For End-of-Life Care) is a collaborative effort of more than 100 organizations, associations and agencies that are working to help Kansans with advanced chronic and terminal illnesses live with dignity, comfort and peace. The conference will include a general address by Judi Lund Person, Vice President of the Division of Quality End-of-Life Care, National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Lund Person was involved in the final editing of the “Clinical Practice Guidelines,” and serves as a consultant on regulatory issues, end of life decision-making, legislative and regulatory advocacy, statewide data collection and strategic planning. A recognized national leader in the field of end-of-life care, Lund Person served for 22 years as the President and CEO of The Carolinas Center for Hospice and End of Life Care before her move to Washington, DC. Following the symposium, the Kansas LIFE Project and its Project Partners will honor leaders from across the state in the first-ever “Champions for LIFE” Gala, to be held in the Grand Ballroom at the Mariott. The festivities begin at 6:00 pm with a reception, dinner, awards presentation and a dance. Opening remarks will be made before the awards ceremony by Grammy nominee, Karen Taylor-Good. Registration for the meeting only is $49; for the meeting and Gala, $99 (if registered by November 1); and $75 for the Gala only.
